US food chain Slim Chickens plans to open Northeast’s first store at the Metrocentre
The first northeastern store of a popular American restaurant chain could open at the Metrocentre.
Slim Chickens has filed plans with Gateshead Council to open a unit in the Qube II section of the mall.
The company, specializing in chicken offerings, has grown rapidly across the United States since it opened in 2003.

It currently has 11 stores in the UK, although the majority are in the south. The closest branch to the North East is currently in Manchester.
However, a license application submitted to Gateshead Council this week shows the company wants permission to sell alcohol until midnight each day at the proposed Metrocentre branch.
ChronicleLive has contacted the company for further comment.
Gourmets will be delighted if the site opens in the northeast.
The company is famous for its buttermilk offerings, but also sells wings, salads and chicken sandwiches alongside shakes and sides such as mac and cheese.
And on the Slim Chickens website, the company says its mission is to “make the best hand-breaded chicken fillets using only the freshest ingredients, served in a friendly atmosphere.”
The public has until July 27 to comment on the license application.
A decision on the request is expected to be made later this summer.
